Safer People Handling Training Courses
New: BTEC Safter People Handling Trainers (Level 4)
In the care sector, manual handling of people is the biggest cause of injury to both staff and service users. The financial costs across the public and private sector and to the taxpayer are incalculable - not to mention the cost in terms of human suffering.
No matter whether in primary care, acute care, care of the elderly or any another sector, how people are moved and handled is vital in promoting recovery, maintaining independence and a feeling of wellbeing.
To be treated with dignity and respect during the handling process is a basic human right, as well as being a legal requirement.
Many approaches or “models” exist, including biomechanical, neuromuscular, neuro-developmental and haptonomic - all have something positive to offer and can be appropriate in the right circumstances.
Recent research carried out by the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) reviewed the array of existing models and found that while they each had their own specific techniques, all were founded on the same principles.
The vast majority of people employed in the care sector show more concern for those they care for than they do for themselves. They often put themselves at risk for the good of their service users. It is clear that all workers would benefit from training and education in this vital, day-to-day aspect of their vocation.
RoSPA’s approach to people handling is principles led; a flexible approach suitable for all care sectors and one that is focused on the person. We utilise a blend of the best of the different approaches mentioned above, enabling delegates to solve problems themselves and develop their people-handling abilities.
RoSPA's people handling safety courses can be held either in-company or at our fully-equipped skills centres, providing delegates with a modern, relevant and realistic training environment.
Our safety training courses for the care industry include the new BTEC Safer People Handling Trainers (Level 4), Risk Assessment and Re-certification courses. Identification of hazards, legal requirements, risk assessment and decision-making are just some of the topics covered in our suite of courses.
Whatever the training course undertaken, delegates will return to their company with new skills and knowledge, enabling them to establish excellent safety procedures, standards and strategies.

BACK-TRACK™
This course now incorporates a BACK-TRACK™ device, which is a motion-sensor, which enhances delegates learning experience.
The BACK-TRACK™ device is a small clip on device, which is worn on the belt of delegates to detect, monitor and record back motion thereby identifying posture related issues and risks.
