Plan Checking Service

08/04/2009

Getting it wrong when constructing a play area can be expensive. That is why more and more people are using the RoSPA Plan Checking service. By having plans checked in advance costly mistakes can be avoided with resultant considerable savings. Equally often the check can recommend cheaper ways of achieving the desired result.

At a cost of normally between £250 and £350 (plus VAT) per site the service is very cost effective and in addition a discount is given against the cost of a subsequent Post Installation Inspection. To get your plans checked contact RoSPA Playsafety on info@rospaplaysafety.co.uk

New Training Venue in Scotland

06/03/2009

Our training schedule in Scotland in 2008 was very successful. In order to increase accessibility RoSPA Play Safety are pleased to announce that during 2009 we will be running some of our Scottish training days in Stirling.

Stirling Council has a high reputation for play provision, with some of the most exiting and innovative play areas in the UK. Candidates will have the opportunity to visit some interesting play spaces during the training days, which demonstrate the variety of play facilities on offer; from new natural play spaces to traditional areas.
With the revision of the Play Equipment standards EN1176 now upon us, our courses are fully updated to reflect the changes. As well as the Register of Play Inspectors examination courses, which are now recognised as the best qualification for inspecting play facilities, we have updated the course content to reflect modern play design and management thinking. So whether you take the exams or not, the courses are valuable for anyone involved in play.

Stirling is located next to the M9, and our training venue is only a few minutes from the Craigforth Junction. Glasgow and Edinburgh are less than an hour away, and candidates from further north will find the journey times are more manageable. Stirling has a main railway station that is only a few minutes away by taxi.

Hotel accommodation is also easier and less expensive in Stirling, and we will be glad to supply a list of hotels or B&B nearby.

RoSPA is pleased to be helping to improve safety for children in Bulgaria in this way and is proud that the government recognises RoSPA's unique skills in this field.

Football Goal Safety

Over the last few years nine children have been killed by falling goalposts (in the same period only two children were killed on a play area). Football goal safety is an important issue. RoSPA can inspect your goals at the same time as they undertake the annual inspection of your play area or playing field. In the meantime the Football Association have some good guidelines on football safety and these can be found on their site www.TheFA.com . The Football Association carried out a programme of on-site inspection and testing of goalpost sets at a number of sites across the country.

Some of the findings are as follows:

  • Of all goals tested, 41% of mini-soccer goals, 50% of 5-a-side goals and 22% of junior goals failed stability tests
  • Ground conditions can affect the stability of goals therefore it is important to liaise with manufacturers on the appropriate ground fixings in relation to weather conditions
  • Staff at every 2nd site were unaware of the safety campaign involving goalposts

More details are available via the FA web site www.TheFA.com. RoSPA Play Safety also has a FREE Football Association information leaflet on the subject. Please contact us for more details.
