Young Drivers at Work

Young Drivers at Work

RoSPA ran a project designed to get a better understanding of the risks faced, and created, by young (17-24 years) drivers at work, including:

  • the views of employers on how well the present system of driver training and testing prepares young people for the sort of driving they do for work
  • whether employers would recognise and make use of a 'driving for work qualification' when recruiting or managing young staff who drive as part of their job, and
  • if so, what should be included in such a qualification or training programme.

The results were published in a report in March 2009. This is freely available from this web page below and will help employers and road safety professionals to better understand the risks for young at-work drivers, give guidance on how those risks can be reduced and what help employers want.

The research in the Young Drivers at Work report was carried out by a questionnaire and interviews with employers and focus groups with young drivers. The research materials are linked below.

Applying the Research: Phase Two of the Project

Based on this research RoSPA is developing a Young Drivers at Work Workshop, aimed at young at-work drivers. The aims of the workshop are to:

  • Develop the participants’ knowledge about the specific issues to do with driving for work raised by employers in the Young Drivers at Work report,
  • Help young at-work drivers understand how they can develop the additional skills they need when driving for work

RoSPA is currently trialling the workshop with several employers and evaluating the results. Based on the workshops an online guide for employers, and others (e.g., road safety officers, driver trainers) will be produced, containing the workshop structure and materials and a guide to its delivery. This will be published in March 2010 as well as a free seminar on the project.

If you would like to register interest for the seminar or want to find out more information on the workshop then please contact Duncan Vernon.
