Home Safety Congress 2010 - Putting a value on safety
November 1-2, 2010, Glasgow Crowne Plaza Hotel
The home should be a safe place, where people of all ages can relax without fear of accidents. However, thousands of people are killed or seriously injured each year in their domestic environment. Should our society place more value on the need for home safety promotion?
Taking place in Glasgow, RoSPA’s 2010 Home Safety Congress will consider different interpretations of “the value of home safety”. The programme will examine how quality of life can be greatly improved with successful safety measures, and how we can evaluate the effectiveness of such measures in financial terms. Click here to view the full event programme.
Add your own value – book and save for 2010
With value at the heart of the event programme, we are pleased to announce that support from the Scottish Government has allowed delegate prices to be greatly reduced. Add this to a 20% early-bird discount (until September 20) and our usual discounts for RoSPA members, and you can attend the entire event from just £181 + VAT.

Auditor training - A clear return on your investment
One of the key ways companies can save money is by bringing health and safety expertise in-house. Yet while auditing is designed to improve safety management, it can sometimes prove time-consuming, costly and disruptive to your day-to-day business operations.
This is why RoSPA has developed the Quality Safety Audit (QSA) - Approved auditor training course, allowing a member of your own organisation to become a fully-trained in-house auditor in only four days. Tailored to meet the unique needs of your business, regardless of sector, size or risk rating, the audit is in line with the Health and Safety Executive’s HSG65 and can also include all aspects of OHSAS18001 if required.
By using the QSA system, you can demonstrate continuous improvement by benchmarking your performance over time. Training a member of your own staff will bring an understanding of and familiarity with the business from within, without causing interruption to its daily functioning. A further benefit of the audit is that it allows you to take control of and evaluate your own health and safety performance by comparing it across sites, divisions and other organisations in your industry sector.
With a portfolio which includes a training course and software package designed to facilitate quick and efficient auditing, QSA is something you really can’t afford to miss. To find out how it can enhance your business success, call us now on 0121 248 2233 or take a look at our website.

Dramatic landscapes - Without dramatic injuries
The vast and majestic Scottish landscape attracts thousands of motorcyclists each year, and with summer underway, the rugged and awe-inspiring scenery draws tourists from across the globe to ride the countryside’s meandering roads. However, motorcyclists are still overrepresented in road accident statistics and RoSPA Scotland is encouraging riders to take extra care and remain conscious of the risks involved. The exhilaration of riding across the open and untamed landscape can mean it’s sometimes tempting to push your limits too far. RoSPA has outlined some of the most common motorcycling accidents:
- Failure to negotiate a left-hand bend on rural roads
- Failure to negotiate a right-hand bend on rural roads
- Collisions at junctions
- Collisions while overtaking
- Loss of control
It’s therefore imperative that motorcyclists are free to enjoy Scotland’s roads without risking injury or death to themselves or others. Riding a motorcycle is a skill that requires continual development and practice. If you haven’t been on the bike for a while, it’s important to ease yourself back in to riding gently and increase your confidence. Consequently, RoSPA is offering all motorcyclists – in both Scotland and the rest of the UK – the opportunity to join advanced riding groups through RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders, or RoADAR. The groups will provide extensive training and advice for motorcyclists of all levels, as well as introducing new and spectacular routes throughout Scotland.

Lessons to be learnt - Safety education
RoSPA has welcomed Ofsted’s recent investigative report on the teaching of PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education) in schools. A primary element of PSHE is accident prevention, and the subject aims to help young people establish an understanding and appreciation of risk. However, it is not currently a legal requirement in UK schools. Ofsted’s report concluded that PSHE teaching is at best satisfactory, and at worst inadequate, with schools failing to provide sufficient time and resources for the lessons. The teaching was deemed to lack continuity and often fails to engage pupils or challenge their perceptions. RoSPA has campaigned for PSHE to become obligatory in all schools, and hopes that the report will amplify the importance of this subject and its role in accident prevention.
Dr Jenny McWhirter, RoSPA’s risk education adviser, said: “Accidents are the biggest killer of children and young people in the UK. We know that safety and risk education is a crucial way of keeping young people safe and preventing accidents. Safety education is a valuable way of helping young people manage risks, rather than eliminating them altogether.”
RoSPA supports Ofsted’s recommendation that schools should ensure timetables allow for the comprehensive teaching of PSHE, and risk and safety education is not neglected. RoSPA will also continue to make the case for PSHE education to become a statutory part of the curriculum, and will carry on offering support to all those who are engaged in this important work. More information about the findings and RoSPA’s response to them can be found here. |
