Be prepared - reduce the risk of collisions
Learning from mistakes is an important life lesson. RoSPA has applied this principle to road collisions and designed a two day Collision Investigation Course to enable organisations to learn from these unfortunate occurrences.
What are the benefits?
The primary benefit is, of course, a reduction in costs - both human and financial - as a result of fewer accidents.
Delegates will also learn to:
- Report on collisions and advise on how to prevent them
- Analyse information including interviews and accident data
- Provide feedback to enable positive behavioural changes
- Conduct interviews.
The course can also be tailored to cover penalty notices and cautions and can be delivered in-company; whatever your requirements, RoSPA can deliver.

May 16-17, 2012
September 19-20, 2012 |

New professional course - BTEC Level 4 Safer People Handling Trainers Course
RoSPA, one of the longest-running providers of Safer People Handling Courses in the United Kingdom, now has a new Safer People Handling Trainers course with Level 4 BTEC accreditation.
The new course is for managers, supervisors and those responsible for educating others in the moving and handling of people within the health or social care sector and education sector.
It follows a blended learning approach, comprising two interactive distance learning units and then four days at a specially-equipped moving and handling training centre.
Also incorporated in this course is a movement tracking device – a motion sensor worn on a belt – which monitors the wearer’s movement and posture and identifies actions such as stooping that are known to be risk factors in back injury. In-company training – at an organisation’s own premises – is also available.
Course dates:

NEW! IOSH Managing Safely in the Aviation Sector
The aviation sector supports nearly 1,000,000 jobs in the UK. There is an enormous demand for relevant training in this highly regulated sector with a real need for managers and supervisors to understand their responsibilities and accountabilities for the health and safety of colleagues and contractors.
As a result, this month sees the launch of a new course - IOSH Managing Safely in the Aviation Sector - developed by RoSPA’s trusted partner Astutis, in conjunction with the IOSH Aviation and Aerospace Group, which covers areas such as ramp safety, aircraft turnaround and airside safety management.
Who should attend?
This course is ideal for line managers and supervisors working within the aviation and airport sector, who need to ensure that their place of work is both compliant and a safe environment.
What are the learning outcomes?
Through completing the course delegates can ensure that, as managers, they meet their responsibilities for health and safety in the workplace, including that they:
- Understand their health and safety responsibilities and accountabilities
- Are able to manage risk and resources effectively
- Have a greater appreciation of airside health and safety management.
Four day courses from £695 are running in Birmingham, Heathrow and Warrington.

Strive to make workplaces safer - Success for local groups
Awards have been presented to 18 voluntary groups that aim to make workplaces in their local areas safer and healthier.
The annual Alan Butler Awards recognise the achievements of groups which form the Safety Groups UK movement. Around 70 groups form the nationwide network and they consist of safety and health professionals from businesses and organisations who give up their time free-of-charge to offer practical help and advice to other employers in their area, particularly small firms.
Awards were presented by Kerry Ross, chairman of Safety Groups UK, at a luncheon at the House of Lords last month. The winners, who received awards in recognition of work carried out during 2011, were:
- Gold award and Alan Butler Overall Winner: Sheffield Occupational Health and Safety Association
- Other gold awards: Charities Safety Group; North Staffs Health and Safety Group; Swansea and West Wales Occupational Safety Group; and, Wiltshire Occupational Safety and Health Association
- Silver awards: Birmingham Health, Safety and Environment Association; Harrogate and District Safety Forum; Isle of Wight Health and Safety Group; Kent Health and Safety Group; Lea and Ouse Valleys Safety Association; Manchester Occupational Health and Safety Group; North Lincs Health and Safety Group; and, North West Wales Occupational Health and Safety Group
- Bronze awards: East Anglia Construction Safety Group; Leicestershire Occupational Safety and Health Association; Nottinghamshire Occupational Safety and Health Association; South Cumbria Occupational Health and Safety Group; and, Thames Valley Health and Safety Group.
The judging process considered: how groups communicated with members, other health and safety organisations and the wider community; which topics and speakers were included in groups’ annual programmes or seminars; how groups supported the Health and Safety Executive and its strategy; how groups encouraged retention and recruitment of members; and, what single achievement each group was most proud of during 2011.
