Booking a last minute holiday? Read this first! |
When booking a late deal in the sun, especially to a villa, don't forget to ask your tour operator about the pool supervision or safety arrangements available. In the last 5 years 33 children (>10 yrs) have drowned on holiday abroad in swimming pools, this is double the number of children who have drowned in UK swimming pools over the same period. Remember to:
-
Check the safety arrangements in advance
-
Actively supervise all young children near water
-
Teach children never to swim alone
-
Be cautious about booking villas that do not have safety fencing (which should stop young children accessing the pool without your help).

Corporate Manslaughter - tips on safeguarding your business |
Companies that pay scant regard to managing health and safety are on notice as the Government finally publishes its Bill to reform the law so corporations can be successfully prosecuted for manslaughter following work-related deaths. The best way to avoid this is to be in a position to prove that proactive preventative measures are in place. The logical starting point is therefore to carry out a health and safety audit to review existing management systems. This should be professionally conducted, ideally by an independent auditor, and must be fully documented.

Inflatables bought for use in swimming pools or sheltered inland water are not suitable for use at UK beaches. This is particularly true for surf beaches in the South West and along the east coast where prevailing westerly winds and strong tides mean that the danger of being swept away is greatly increased.
RoSPA recommend that families visit supervised beaches, where lifeguards are on hand to give safety advice and reassurance. Such beaches are listed on the Good Beach Guide website ( www.goodbeachguide.co.uk) and www.seasideawards.org.uk In addition to the safety benefits these beaches are often the cleanest and most family friendly in the UK.
