Spotlight on Small Business |
The critical list - the real costs of workplace accidents
In addition to the human and reputation losses, accidents at work can seriously damage your financial health. According to a HSE case study, a small engineering company employing 15 people incurred £45,000 of hidden costs, when a worker entangled his arm in an unguarded drill machine. In addition to the prosecution of the MD, the business incurred hidden costs including:
- Wages to the injured worker
- Loss of production time
- Overtime and replacement worker charges
- Legal expenses, fines and court costs
- Increase in employers liability insurance
- Loss of management time
|
One method to avoid these unnecessary costs is to assess your risks before they happen, through a RoSPA Health and Safety Review. A RoSPA consultant will:
- Assess the health and safety issues faced by your organisation
- Evaluate how well your present processes are meeting those needs
- Report back in detail on the findings
- Highlight how you are managing risks in specific areas of your business
- Recommendations about how best to proceed including how to develop and implement a safety action plan.
