In a crash, an unrestrained pet could be seriously injured, or injure people in a car. At 30 mph, for example, a 50lb border collie would be thrown forward with a force equivalent to almost nine 12 stone men. Unrestrained pets can also distract the driver, and cause an accident.

The HSE will be running a Better Backs Campaign starting in October. Get on board by planning your own back care awareness campaign and distributing leaflets to employees, screening educational films and displaying posters around your workplace. During World War 2, RoSPA produced a series of accident prevention posters aimed at workers in the industrial factories and workshops supplying the British war effort. These posters were produced as industrial safety propaganda to support the production drive that supplied the armed services. The posters were commissioned by RoSPA and underwritten by Ernest Bevin's Ministry of Labour.

A number of Police forces have recently introduced new initiatives in their campaign to increase company bosses' awareness of the need to comply with H&S at Work legislation in respect of Managing Occupational Road Risk. Chief Inspector Ian Brooks from the Metropolitan Police will present on investigating corporate and organisational failings and holding individuals and companies to account at the forthcoming Road Deaths and Corporate Manslaughter Seminar.
