Needless deaths – 25 years on

SeatbeltTwenty-five years after a successful RoSPA campaign to introduce the first seatbelt law, around 370 people a year are still being killed in road crashes because they do not wear a seatbelt.

Even though well over 50,000 lives have been saved by seatbelts since 1983, Kevin Clinton, Head of Road Safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: “It is shocking that a stubborn minority of people still do not belt up when they get into a vehicle. Research shows that about a third of car occupants receiving fatal injuries are not wearing seatbelts.”

Looking for guidance on managing workplace transport risks?

Workplace Transport Workplace transport is the second largest cause of accidents in the workplace. Its risks are currently covered by several sets of regulations and many employers and duty holders find this confusing. RoSPA’s Managing Workplace Transport Risks Conference on 14th May in Birmingham aims to address this.

HSE Health and Safety Inspector Jayn Johnson will be taking the guesswork out of understanding the maze of legislation by taking a practical and useful look at what an inspector looks for when visiting a site. Taking lead from the HSE’s Workplace Transport Route Map, a new tool setting out crosscutting guidance to assist in the management of workplace transport risks, Jayn will cover core safety subjects such as:

  • Site layouts and internal traffic routes
  • Vehicle selection, suitability, maintenance and movements
  • Operational issues such as loading, unloading and tipping
  • Driver competence and fitness to drive

Spotlight on the emergency services sector

The Fire and Rescue Services

The Fire and Rescue Services
The Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 imposes four key responsibilities on Fire and Rescue Services which are:

  • Community fire safety
  • Fighting fires
  • Dealing with road traffic accidents
  • Responding to other emergencies, such as flooding

According to HSE, the injury and ill-health rates for the Fire and Rescue Service are above average and there remains scope for improvement through better management of health and safety as part of good management practice generally.
