Health and Safety news update |
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Health and Safety Commission have merged to form a single national regulatory body.
The new body, called the Health and Safety Executive, will help to strengthen the importance of health and safety in the workplace.
It is anticipated that the new body will have greater accountability, demanding greater health and safety compliance from organisations, which means they must strive to achieve certain standards in their practices.
Are you worried that you are not doing enough to be legally compliant? Start here with RoSPA’s Health and Safety Review.

Audit Switching Service - new! |
The thought of changing your audit system can be daunting, meaning many organisations continue to use an unsatisfactory service, rather than risk making the change. This need no longer be the case, as RoSPA’s new Audit Switching Service enables a seamless transition from your current system to RoSPA’s Quality Safety Audit.
Existing information is kept safe and secure so you retain the ability to benchmark performance, year on year. Furthermore, you can remain focused on your core activities during the transfer, as our experienced consultants will handle the switch.
Once you’ve made the transition to RoSPA’s Quality Safety Audit you’ll be able to benefit from the unique advantages of this system, which is in line with HSG65, fully flexible and linked to both an awards and a training scheme. QSA can also be used to assess compliance with OHSAS 18001.
So, if you’re thinking of switching, call us on 0121 248 2076 or email consultancy@rospa.com.

The law has changed – have you?
|
The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act is now in effect, as of April 6, 2008.
The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 is a landmark in law. For the first time, companies and organisations can be found guilty of corporate manslaughter as a result of serious management failures resulting in a gross breach of a duty of care.
The Act clarifies the criminal liabilities of companies including large organisations where serious failures in the management of health and safety result in a fatality.
RoSPA’s mission is to save lives and reduce injuries, and we offer a variety of training and consultancy, for workplace health and safety solutions. Click here for the full list and find out what can help you become legally compliant.
Do you have staff who drive for work? RoSPA’s Driver and Fleet Solutions can help you assess your risk, and find solutions to comply with the law.

Drink Drive Poll - your results and RoSPA’s campaign
|
Thank you to all those who have taken part in RoSPA’s Poll. The results are:
- 81% believe that the drink-drive limit should be reduced, with 51% believing that it should be reduced to zero.
- 90% believe that the police should have the power to conduct random breath tests.
|
These results are in line with RoSPA’s campaign for a reduction in the drink drive limit to reinforce the message that it is unsafe to have even the one drink before you drive. This would save around 65 lives and 230 serious injuries on Britain’s roads each year.
Research shows that driver performance is impaired at a blood alcohol level of 50mg - which is lower than the current drink drive limit - and between 50mg and 80mg you are two to two-and-a-half times more likely to be involved in an accident and six times more likely to be in a fatal crash than with no alcohol in your system.
Effective enforcement of the drink drive laws is essential and RoSPA is also calling for random breath testing. It should be high profile and highly visible in order to enhance its deterrent affect.
If you would like to support RoSPA’s drink-drive campaign, and our wider efforts to save lives, please click here to donate to RoSPA.
