Injuries to doctors, nurses and other health workers have cost the National Health Service nearly a quarter of a billion pounds, new figures have revealed.
Figures from the Health and Safety Executive show health workers suffered more than 24,000 serious injuries in three years.
In the three years until April 2007, there were 24,165 occupational injuries to NHS workers that left staff unable to do their jobs for three days or more.
The average cost of an injury is £9,731, including the costs of lost working hours and finding replacement staff.
Health service unions said the injuries included slips, trips and falls, injuries while moving and handling patients, needle injuries and exposure to harmful chemicals.

We are about to rebuild the RoSPA web site and we need to ensure that the section headings within the site give a clear unambiguous indication of the content which you, the user, will find within that section. We would appreciate it if you could take a look at some alternative suggestions for section headings and rank them, based on which you think best achieve this aim. Remember, your opinion counts!

Managing Stress - 13.8 million working days lost per year
According to the HSE stress is likely to become the most dangerous risk to business in the early part of the 21st century. It claims that self-reported work-related stress, depression or anxiety account for an estimated 13.8 million reported lost working days per year in Britain.
All organisations have a legal obligation to take action on this important issue and as well as reducing sickness absence costs, tackling stress can have a positive effect on employee turnover, productivity, customer satisfaction and company image.
RoSPA’s Managing Stress and Violence one-day course, aims to empower managers to tackle the root causes of stress, including the role played by actual or threatened violence in the workplace. It adopts a risk assessment approach, with an emphasis on tackling stress and violence within existing health and safety management systems.
Next Course Date: Birmingham 05 June 2008.

English as a second language? Free new road safety resource
New for 2008! With the help of Birmingham City Council Road Safety Department, and the support of the Department for Transport, RoSPA has developed a new teaching resource ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Key Stage 2 Road Safety Resource consists of a Teacher’s Guide and six Children’s Workbooks, the resource is designed to develop the spoken and written skills of learners of English as a second language, using a Road Safety theme.
Research shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to be involved in road accidents – even more so if those children have poorly-developed English language skills. This resource aims to help address this problem. A number of key road safety words, phrases and messages are written in Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu and Polish – as well as in English (although speakers of other languages can be included as well).
These workbooks are available from RoSPA as a free booklet whilst stocks last (MS348 & MS358), or to download as a pdf.
Please call 0121 248 2126 for further information.
