2008 has been another record-breaking year for the annual RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards with over 1550 entries. These Awards recognise the achievements of organisations that have excelled in health and safety and were celebrated at three glittering gala dinners, with entertainment provided by comedian, Ed Byrne.
RoSPA congratulates all the award winners on their outstanding contribution in raising the standards in health and safety excellence and would like to encourage others to follow their leading example.
Trant Construction Limited from Southampton has won RoSPA’s top occupational health and safety award, the Sir George Earle Trophy.
The company was praised by the panel for: hands-on health and safety leadership by all Trant’s directors and senior managers; a practical approach to training and briefing; disciplined use of point-of-work risk assessments; the involvement of employees in reporting and solving problems; eagerness to learn from accidents and incidents; creative approaches to occupational health and well-being; and the induction, training and supervision of migrant workers.
Other trophy winners include:
- The RoSPA Training Trophy – GE Healthcare - The Grove Centre, Amersham
- The Astor Trophy for the best-managed occupational health programme – AWE plc, Reading
- International Dilmun Environmental Award, sponsored by Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company of Bahrain – AWE plc, Reading
- RoSPA Managing Occupational Road Risk Trophy – ScottishPower Fleet Business
- Worker Involvement in Safety and Health Trophy, sponsored by Springfields Fuels Ltd – Royal Mail Group, Swindon.

RoSPA on-line: preventing accidents a 'young drivers' special

It is that time of year when riding a bike on holiday or locally for leisure can create a lot of fun, but equally can cause a lot of accidents.
To help young drivers and riders, RoSPA offers individuals the chance to take training with a local RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders bike group and meet fellow bikers interested in improving their riding skills.
The Advanced Drivers and Riders website is the ideal place to browse what is available to help you, your friends and family stay safe this summer.
RoSPA’s accident prevention activity is echoed by the Mid & South Wales Safety Camera Partnership who have a website, www.deadlymates.com, aimed at young drivers and their passengers and features a driving game, information on driving safely and lots of downloads.
