‘Bikeability’ – The New Cycling Proficiency for the 21st Century


Bikeability has been launched marking a complete makeover of cycle training for today’s children.

Many adults will remember doing their Cycling Proficiency Test, Bikeability is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads. The aim is that by 2009 half of all year six pupils in England will be trained through schemes awarding Bikeability. A new Bikeability website – www.bikeability.org.uk – has also been launched to offer updates on news about the initial six month trial and national roll out in 2007.

Via a series of tick-box questions, the self-assessment survey identifies key areas that may require attention. Completing it will provide a valuable insight into your organisation’s current status. How to Buy a More Pedestrian Friendly CarWhile there is much advice to help consumers wishing to purchase environmentally friendly cars, advice on pedestrian friendly cars is less prevalent. However, an organisation called EuroNCAP test vehicles to see how pedestrian friendly they have been designed to be. To date, only one car has been awarded 4 stars in the pedestrian protection tests, and only 13 more cars out of over 200 tested have achieved 3 stars.
