To help pupils gain an understanding of the huge impact road accidents have on people's lives.

Teacher's notes
Be aware of the possible sensitivity of this issue. It should be omitted if there is any possibility of upsetting any children who have lost relatives or friends in road accidents. It is therefore vital that you know your children!
Content
Begin the assembly by asking the children to put their hands up if they have ever had or known someone who has had an accident on the road. (There will probably be quite a few hands up - you could comment on this).
Explain to the children that road accidents happen often, probably far more often than they think. Tell them you are going to read them a few facts.
Did you know that...?
97 per cent of all transport-related accidents happen on the road. Even though we hear a lot about train and plane accidents in the news, we hear about them because they are rare. Road accidents happen all the time and there are too many to report in the news.
Did you know that...?
Even though Britain has a very good road safety record, when it comes to child pedestrians, we have one of the worst records in Europe! Only Ireland and Portugal have more children killed or seriously injured on the roads.
Get the children to stand up. Ask one class to sit down.
Did you know that...?
42 children are killed or injured on the road every day in Britain? Sadly, that’s more than a whole class every single day. Many children are unable to go to school after an accident because they are in hospital or, even worse, have been killed.
Ask the children to sit, one class at a time and count how many days it would take for the school to "disappear". Not very many days at all. Think of all the families and friends that would be affected. And this just shows the numbers of children. Every day thousands of people are affected by road accidents.
Explain to the children that this is why being careful on the roads is so important. These accidents are happening every day, all around us.
Reflection
Ask for a few moments' silence to think about all the people (children, parents and friends) affected by accidents.
Ask the children to think about how they can help keep themselves and others safe when on or near the roads.
