Click here to donate to RoSPA!1) The need for a framework for risk education to raise the standard of Risk Education in schools

The aim is to improve education about risk and risk assessment. To do this it is important to:

i. develop a generic approach to risk education to balance the existing single issue approach so that understanding gained in one context can be applied to other contexts.
ii. build an incremental curriculum framework which takes account of children’s conceptual development.
iii. identify effective teaching and learning strategies which enable the acquisition of both knowledge and skills and also address attitudes and beliefs.
iv. link to existing national curricula.

Outcome: That a significant number of schools adopt the risk education framework. In addition develop specific, relevant resources to support key messages

2) Raise the profile of Risk Education in schools and other educational establishments

The aim is to improve our understanding of the standard of risk education. To do this it is important to:

i. identify criteria against which standards can be monitored
ii. identify a monitoring process
iii. ensure criteria and monitoring process are realistic and feasible

It is necessary to develop, in partnership with relevant professional bodies, a core component of risk assessment and management in teacher training programmes.

Produce appropriate resources to enable a consistent message on risk and safety education to be delivered

Make risk and safety education of significance to academics, professional organisations and government departments

Outcome: To ensure a greater emphasis is placed on safety and risk education the DfCFS citizenship /PSHE agendas. To develop and pilot a core component on risk in ITT programmes.
