The RoSPA Collection

Unearthing RoSPA's hidden treasures...
with Janice Cave MBE, RoSPA History Project Manager

A recently discovered collection of historical RoSPA safety posters went on public display for the first time alongside RoSPA Awards at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel.

The exhibition featured 40 iconic posters dating from the 1930s to the 1970s, covering all aspects of safety. They form part of a collection of more than 700 historical posters and artwork for posters that RoSPA discovered last year while clearing out its old warehouse.

Among the famous artists who produced artwork for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents during this period were Tom Eckersley, Leonard Cusden and the cartoonist George Smith, better known as Gus.

Due to the delicacy of the posters, they were reproduced photographically to ensure they could be exhibited safely.
