Managing Workplace Transport Risks
A matter of life or death
RoSPA Training Centre, Edgbaston, Birmingham - 3rd December 2007
Workplace transport is the second largest cause of accidents in the workplace. Each year approximately 70 people are killed and 2000 seriously injured in accidents involving vehicles in and around workplaces. In addition there are around 5000 injuries that cause people to be off work for more than three days.
The HSE’s Workplace Transport Safety 'Route Map' is a new tool setting out cross cutting guidance to assist in the management of the various risks posed by workplace transport.
These risks are currently covered by several sets of regulations and many employers and duty holders find this confusing. Various guidance publications have also been developed, some generic, some for specific procedures in certain sectors, but there is no clear cross-cutting guidance which links topics such as assessing driver skill and ensuring effective site management.
