Home Safety in Northern Ireland

The Northern Ireland Home Accident Prevention Strategy 2015 – 2025 highlights that, on average, two people die a week because of home accidents in Northern Ireland with approximately 17,000 admissions to hospital each year due to unintentional injuries.

The vision for the Strategy is:

The population of Northern Ireland has the best chance of living safety in the home environment where there is negligible risk of unintentional injury.

A Home Accident Prevention Strategic Implementation Group has been established to oversee and drive forward the implementation of the Strategy. The Group identified the need to establish three regional subgroups to take forward actions on their behalf:

  • Communications and Education Subgroup
  • Research and Information Subgroup
  • Home Safety Assessment Scheme Subgroup

RoSPA works with other partners to avoid duplication of effort and to pool resources and expertise.

RoSPA concentrates on a life course approach; our work covers all ages and stages of life with the aim of minimising injuries and deaths caused by home accidents. However particular emphasis is placed on those who are most at risk - the under 5s, the over 65s and other vulnerable groups with the ultimate aim of minimising injuries and deaths caused by home accidents.

We continuously study all data available to us, which adds to our conviction that accident prevention can relieve the mounting pressures on our emergency departments, our healthcare system and wider society. Our findings were published in Northern Ireland’s Big Book of Accident Prevention in 2013; much of the content was replicated in the Northern Ireland Home Accident Prevention Strategy 2015 -2025.
