Course aim

To provide delegates with an introduction to their roles and responsibilities in health and safety as company directors.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training the learners should be able to:
  • Describe the reasons why they should be interested in health and safety
  • Describe the consequences of good and poor safety management
  • Describe their duties under the Plan Do Check Act cycle and key elements from the ‘Leading from the top’ 7 principles

Course content

  • Moral, financial and legal reasons for health and safety
  • Overview of civil and criminal health and safety law including negligence, duty of care, the Health and Safety at Work Act, gross negligence manslaughter and corporate manslaughter
  • Overview of fines guidelines for breach of health and safety law
  • Leadership responsibilities for organisational health and safety as defined by the Health and Safety Executive
