Cold, wet, tired, being bitten by midges – and that was before the team even started their first mountain.

It was a damp, early start for four RoSPA staff (and one foolhardy brother-in-law) as they pulled on to a car park at the base of Ben Nevis at 5.30am in July 2015, ahead of their Three Peaks Challenge.

Perhaps one of the most daunting walking challenges in the UK – taking on the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in just 24 hours – the Three Peaks proved to be a physically and mentally punishing effort for all involved.

The team completed Ben Nevis in just over five hours, before an equally-long drive took them to Cumbria and Scafell Pike. Three-and-a-half incredibly wet and windy hours later the team were once again on their way, this time for a six hour drive to the final mountain, Snowdon.

At 2.30am (the next day!) the team once again struck out for a peak, knees and muscles already aching, and with very little broken sleep during the long car journeys.

Faced by pouring rain, howling wind and pitch-black darkness which led them to stray from the beaten track several times, the RoSPA team reached the summit as dawn was breaking, meaning they had completed their mammoth fundraising task at around the 25 hour mark.

Unfortunately, the relief and joy at their success was quickly dampened when they descended from the fog at the top of Snowdon only to find they had walked back down the wrong side – a taxi ride later, they were back at their car and on their way home!

Members of Wales YFC, which had chosen RoSPA as its charity of the year, also took on the challenge.
