Rural road safety

An overview of the statistics and the common causes of collisions on rural roads

More deaths occur on rural roads than on urban ones. In 2017, there were 992 fatal accidents on rural roads compared to 607 on urban roads.

The number of serious and slight injury collisions is higher in urban areas: in 2017 there were 85,855 on urban roads and 37,651 on rural roads. These figures show that while the number of collisions is higher in urban areas, there is a greater chance of dying on rural roads, with 55 percent of the fatal accidents occurring on these roads.
