Home Safety Statistics in Northern Ireland

A picture of a map of Northern Ireland.

In Northern Ireland every year more than 70 people die in home accidents and almost 70,000 visit their local accident and emergency departments seeking help.

Home accidents account for 41 per cent of all accidental injuries treated at our A&E departments. It is estimated that out of every seven people attending A&E because of a home accident, one person is actually admitted to hospital overnight.

The cost of accidents

The benefits of prevention are clear and quantifiable in terms of health and economic costs:

  • Potential to save lives
  • Quality of life
  • The cost of acute care
  • The cost of continued community support required after hospital discharge.

Fortunately, many of these accidents are preventable.
