RoSPA Level 3 Award for Manual Handling Trainers

Work related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) continue to place a significant burden on employers and workforces across Great Britain, accounting for 44% of all work related ill-health. 9,466,000 working days were lost (HSE) in 2014/15. The risk and impact of WRMSD can be reduced with appropriate manual handling training and education.


Designed and developed through consultation with stakeholders, employers and subject experts, the RoSPA Qualification, Level 3 Award for Manual Handling Trainers, meets the needs of both learners and employers. Learners are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to train and educate others in the safe movement of loads within the workplace.


This qualification supports the role of the manual handling trainer by enhancing their expertise in order to provide suitable and sufficient training that meets both legislative requirements and current best practice, ensuring the well-being of the workforce.

This qualification consists of three mandatory units

  • Unit 1 - principles and processes that underpin safe handling in the workplace
  • Unit 2 - application of basic biomechanical principles and safe practices to manual handling tasks within the workplace
  • Unit 3 - preparing, delivering and evaluating a training session


All three units are mandatory and all must be passed to gain a qualification. The total qualification time (TQT) is 25 hours and guided learning hours (GLH) is 16 hours.
