What is mental health in the workplace?

One in four people in the UK will have a mental health problem at some point in their life.

Mental health is all about how we think, feel and behave, with anxiety and depression being the most common mental health problems. These are usually caused by a reaction to a difficult life event, which can be caused or made worse by work-related issues.

Work can intensify a pre-existing condition and problems at work can bring on symptoms or make their effects worse. Whether work is the cause of the health issue or intensifying it, employers have a legal responsibility to help their employees. Why is mental health important in the workplace?

Mental Health First Aid England states that stress, anxiety and depression are the biggest cause of sickness absence in our society. Mental ill health is responsible for 91 million working days lost every year.

Latest research estimates that mental ill health costs UK employers £34.9 billion each year, but simple steps to improve the management of mental health in the workplace will allow employers to save 30% or more of these costs.

Who can study a mental health training course?

We offer a suite of mental health and wellbeing training courses from designing, delivering and evaluating your wellbeing strategy to raising awareness within your workforce.

Who needs mental health and wellbeing training?

All directors and managers should have some form of wellbeing and mental health training. The HSE states that it is recommended that if you work in a company with 5-50 workers, there should be at least one person trained in mental health first aid. You should then need another first-aider for every 50 workers after that.
