The benefits of workplace wellbeing initiatives

The benefits of workplace wellbeing initiatives

Wellbeing initiatives are designed to help everyone feel more satisfied and positive about the time they spend at work, and beyond. At times of stress, worry and acute financial concern, they are more important than ever in large companies, and also small ones. Jon Herbert reports in this article from Croner-i.

Now recognised as an important link between health, work and non-work activities, the term wellbeing refers to actions, systems, aids and processes that are increasingly being introduced by business organisations to improve the happiness, safety, morale and performance of their employees.

Used to create pleasant and supportive teams and social and community environments, wellbeing initiatives often encourage exercise, involve social events and might typically include lunchtime walking clubs to boost staff fitness, teamwork and mental wellbeing.

Although wellbeing is now a growing and rapidly evolving “industry” in its own right, the underpinning aim is to minimise the negatives and emphasise the positives in life.

All companies great and small

Large organisations such as Google and Facebook are well-known champions of workplace wellbeing with a reputation for promoting world-leading wellbeing initiatives among their large workforces. But there is no reason why smaller firms should not benefit from equally effective programmes.

There are no specific guidelines, regulations or standards to adhere to; creativity is important and an online search will identify many principles, themes and ideas that can be experimented with as part of a tailored “suck-it-and-see” approach to help people build positive habits that stick.
