Achievement: Winners of the Inspiring Women in Safety Award, sponsored by L’Oréal, at the 2022 and 2023 RoSPA Health and Safety Awards respectively.

Background: The Award was created to recognise an individual who has made a significant inspirational impact in the world of health, safety and wellbeing, through activities within the workplace, or by use of their skills and expertise beyond the workplace.

Entrants are narrowed down to a shortlist and RoSPA Awards judges consider how nominees have been a source of inspiration, for instance by showing passion in the way they work, influencing networks beyond their organisation or championing gender, diversity and inclusion.

Results: Karen Godfrey won the inaugural Inspiring Women in Safety Award in 2022. She was praised by the judges for her stand-out efforts in the construction industry, and strong focus on using her skills to develop others to grow in their health and safety careers.  Her passion for supporting mental health improvement across the industry was also described as innovative and inspiring.

Dr Huda Khalifa Alsalmi

Head of the HSE Department at Abu Dhabi City Municipality in the United Arab Emirates

Dr Huda Khalifa Alsalmi was the first Emirati woman to be appointed as an environment, health and safety director in the Government of Abu Dhabi. The RoSPA judges said that her nomination showed not only her dedication to health and safety management but also her evident passion for the next generation of female health and safety leaders, through involvement in extensive mentoring and educational arrangements. Promoting the importance of health and safety within education is a key part of this mentoring, with around 15 female students each year benefitting from practical training at Abu Dhabi City Municipality’s facilities.

Speaking on her award win, Dr Alsalmi said: “Winning the RoSPA Award is an extraordinary achievement that fills me with deep honour and humility. Being recognised as an inspiring woman in the organisation is a great privilege and motivates me to strive for even greater heights of success.
