   A is for.....

Among occupational health and safety professionals, the word ‘act’ has a number of different meanings: from the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 to the ‘act’ions associated with planning, doing and checking those health and safety-related tasks that ultimately save lives.

We also need to act on our continuous professional development (CPD).


You are at the centre of your CPD cycle. Through systematic planning you can identify what you want to achieve, where you need to develop and map out your next steps. Depending on where you are in your career, this plan may cover a number of years as you develop your personal brand and begin to tell your story, and then identify the niche where your specialisms are a best fit.

It is so important to do the ‘things’ that meet your needs, revisiting the planning process as you develop and as new and emerging topics become a priority.

A is also for agility. It is important to plan time in fresh air and do things that keep you physically and mentally fit. However CPD also involves agility of a different kind- the pandemic has challenged us to think and understand COVIDand its impact on people and organisations quickly. OSH professionals must translate what we have learned to ensure our co-workers, families and communities remain safe and healthy.

A is also for accentuate, as you can use your CPD cycle to highlight the value you add to your organisation. Make yourself visible by sharing your learning and development journey with your peers.

The singer Johnny Mercer and his band The Pied Pipers captured CPD perfectly in the following verse:
