Moving and handling courses

Teaching workers how to move and handle people safely

What is moving and handling?

Working within healthcare and social care settings often involves moving, lifting, or otherwise manually handling the people within your care. Our moving and handling training courses are designed to educate participants regarding both the requirements and risks associated with moving people safely.

"The tutor’s knowledge and skills were passed on in a friendly and supportive manner, taking the time to answer questions and back this up with real life examples. He even made the course interesting and I learned and retained lots and lots to pass on to my delegates. Thank you"

Why is moving and handling training important?

It’s estimated that around 249 million hours of home care are delivered each year, as an essential part of assisting with personal care and enabling vulnerable people to live as independently as possible. Assistance from carers can often involve lifting which must be managed in order to reduce the risk of short and long term injury, as well as thepotential for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

Lifting in particular poses a big risk to both the lifter and especially to the person being lifted for healthcare organisations, including; hospitals, care homes, leisure and education, as poor lifting techniques and incorrect equipment can in fact make existing conditions worse for both parties. Specialist equipment is on the market to assist, but staff need to know when and how to use it.
