Raising awareness

RoSPA takes on the challenge of reducing fatalities to workers and members of the public - due to reportable accidents at work and work-related road crashes; reducing early deaths - due to past exposure to hazardous agents, for example asbestos, and reducing the number of working days lost -due to work-related accidents and ill health.

Size of the problem

Key annual figures 2014/15

  • 142 workers killed at work
  • 76 000 other injuries to employees were reported under RIDDOR
  • 152 000 over-7-day absence injuries occurred (LFS)
  • 1.2 million working people were suffering from a work-related illness (2011/12)
  • 27.3 million working days were lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury (2011/12)
  • Workplace injuries and ill health (excluding cancer) cost society an estimated £14.3 billion in 2013/14 (based on 2013 prices). 1

Our role at RoSPA is to focus our resources in ways which will help to reduce these figures and contribute to sustainable safety change. See more Occupational Safety Facts and Figures.

Along with Influencing Policy, Leading H & S Thinking, Disseminating Information, working with its National Committee, Supporting Local Safety Groups and Working with Higher Performers, RoSPA raises awareness of Occupational Safety & Health through:

The RoSPA Safety Awards recognise and celebrate occupational health and safety achievement and provide a series of exemplars of good practice, as positive role models for other organisations to learn from and emulate.

RoSPA organises conferences and seminars throughout the year on key Occupational Safety issues, offering the opportunity to keep up to date with current issues and learn about new initiatives.

Making the business case for H&S

RoSPA believes that Health and Safety should be seen as part of the mainstream business agenda. Controlling risks to health and safety goes right to the heart of operations and it cannot be achieved successfully unless it is fully integrated with all other aspects of day-to-day business practice. Read more about making the business case here.

Local safety groups

RoSPA provides the secretariat for Safety Groups UK which is the coordinating body for the 70+ Safety Groups around the UK. Local Groups hold regular meetings on health and safety issues, signposting current topics as well as providing a local forum for communication and discussion.
