Safety in the home

Home is where the heart is. But also where the most accidents happen.

Every year in the UK more than 6,000 people die in accidents in the home and 2.7 million attend accident and emergency departments seeking treatment.

The biggest risks

The most common accidents include falls, burns, scalds, carbon monoxide poisoning and poisonings by medicine or cleaning products that have not been locked away.

Age-related risks

Over 65s

Older people, in particular the frail elderly, are one of the groups of our population most vulnerable to accidents, particularly in and around the home. In 2009 in England and Wales alone, people aged 65 or over accounted for 7,475 deaths as a result of an accident. The great majority of both fatal and non-fatal accidents involving older people are falls.

Under 5s

The biggest accident risks to under-5s are from choking, suffocation and strangulation; falls; accidental poisonings; and burns and scalds.
