Course structure and assessment

This manual handling trainers course adopts a blended learning approach and combines face-to-face instruction with electronic self-directed learning to deliver improved costs and educational benefits that connect learning to the workplace and assists the delegates to develop practice that demonstrates creativity, initiative and adaptability when delivering manual handling training to the workforce.

Delegates will be assessed against assessment criteria through submission of assessment activities and learning environment practical observations.

Course Content

This qualification consists of three mandatory units:

Unit 1 - Understanding the principles of manual handling in the workplace
This unit develops the learner’s knowledge of the principles and processes that underpin safe handling in the workplace.

Unit 2 – Application of safe practices to manual handling activities
This unit develops the learner’s knowledge and skills in the application of basic biomechanical principles and safe practices to manual handling tasks within the work place.

Unit 3 – Delivering a manual handling training session
The final unit develops the learner’s knowledge and skills so they can prepare, deliver and evaluate a manual handling training session. Dependent on the learners preferred choice, many find it beneficial to bring a laptop to complete their session plan and prepare for their micro-teach.

All units are mandatory and all three units must be passed to gain the qualification.
The course takes place over 3 days of learning. This is blended mix of pre-course reading and exercises, classroom sessions and learner self study over the evenings of day 1 and 2 of the course.

Assessment and Qualification

The qualification is assessed through:

  • Practical demonstrations
  • A written session and action plan
  • A 30 minute micro-teach

On successful completion of the written and practical assessments learners will be awarded a RoSPA level 3 award for manual handling trainer's certificate.
