Effective Approaches to Safety and Risk Education

RoSPA and the PSHE Association collaborated on a review of the literature on effective safety education. The findings have been summarised as 10 principles for effective safety education. The aim is to help teachers and others choose the best resources for their circumstances and to help those who develop resources to adopt an evidence-based approach to their work.

The resources include: a short briefing paper; a review of the literature and a check list to help you assess safety education materials. We also use the 10 principles when developing new resources and when giving advice to authors. The 10 principles form the basis of the resource profiler developed for the LASER Alliance

SDERA (School Drug Education Road Aware) in Western Australia has also published their principles for effective road safety education which have much in common with the 10 principles for effective safety education

The PSHE Association has developed 10 principles for effective PSHE education which are based on theories of child development and health promotion which you might also find useful.

The Institute of Health Promotion and Education has identified priorities within its manifesto for safety eduction to ensure the Government and its departments with responsibility for children and young people work more closely together.
