Baroness Crawley of Edgbaston joins Birmingham-based charity the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) mission to save lives
Baroness Crawley of Edgbaston has joined the Presidential Team of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the national accident prevention charity based in Edgbaston in Birmingham.
This appointment highlights Baroness Crawley’s commitment to the causes of consumer protection and social justice that drive RoSPA’s work, and which she has championed as a life peer since 1998. Baroness Crawley has spoken about issues such as the wellbeing of women and social care, and has contributed to recent debates on the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill and the Retained EU Law Bill, both of which aim to uphold strong protections and safety standards for UK consumers. She has also urged government to ensure that local regulatory services, including trading standards and environmental health, remain effective despite budget cuts
Baroness Crawley’s decision to support a Birmingham-based charity demonstrates her ongoing dedication to the city she represented as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Birmingham East between 1984 and 1999, where she was instrumental in advancing the European Maternity Leave Directive for British women.
Joining Life President Lord Jordan of Bournville and Vice President Mary Watkins of Tavistock on RoSPA’s Presidential Team, Baroness Crawley’s appointment comes at a significant point in the charity’s illustrious history. Celebrating 100 years of royal patronage in 2026, RoSPA’s legacy includes pioneering initiatives such as the Green Cross Code, drink driving laws and occupational health regulations which are now cornerstones of UK society and saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
RoSPA recently launched its campaign for a National Accident Prevention Strategy to tackle the alarming rise in accidental deaths in the UK over the last 10 years. Baroness Crawley’s political influence and expertise will be invaluable in helping the charity advocate for the government to adopt this comprehensive guide to reducing the human and economic costs of preventable accidents, bringing RoSPA closer to its vision of an accident-free world.
Speaking about her appointment, Baroness Crawley said:
‘The right for everyone to live their lives safely is fundamental to society. While people have a responsibility to protect themselves and others as best they can, ensuring that the regulations, systems and products that we use every day – be that at work, at home, while travelling or during our leisure time – are designed with people’s safety at the core is the most effective way of preventing accidents. I support RoSPA’s commitment to not just highlighting the tragic cost of accidents but also producing practical solutions to save lives, and am proud to be joining the Presidential Team of a respected charity working on a cause so close to my heart.’
