Saving health and safety - success in the House of Lords

British safety standards have saved over 125,000 lives over the last 50 years, with scores more protected from lifechanging injuries. That’s why we are delighted that our campaign in the House of Lords to save vital health and safety laws from the REUL Bill was a success.

Following our campaigning, lifesaving health and safety legislation does not feature in the REUL bonfire, and consequently more people will get home to their family safely at the end of their working day.

This result would not have been possible without the continued and valued support of our trusted members and allies. We would like to wholeheartedly thank all those who pledged their support to our campaign and continue to stand behind RoSPA.

Becky Hickman, Chief Executive of RoSPA, said:

““We are thrilled that we saved lifesaving health and safety legislation from the REUL bonfire; and hope the UK will retain its status as a global leader in the area of health and safety. This is a major win that would not have been possible without the continued support from our trusted allies, and for that – we thank you.

Although we have clearly demonstrated the value of having a robust legal framework for health and safety, we are fully alert to the potential for ‘de-regulation’ to sweep away essential legislation and we will be watching developments closely.”
