What is a display screen equipment assessment?
6.9 million working days are lost due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s). Display Screen Equipment (DSE) is a device or piece of equipment that has an alphanumeric or graphic display screen, including both conventional display screens and those used in emerging technologies such as laptops, touch-screens and other similar devices.
Like any risk assessment, the aim of a DSE assessment is to identify the hazards and assess the likelihood and severity of harm to those that may be affected by using the equipment.
What is display screen equipment training?
Our DSE training course aims to provide delegates with an understanding of the legal framework and underpinning of ergonomic principles of DSE including smart phones, laptops and tablets. DSE training is ideal for anyone with line management responsibilities, those who have been appointed as DSE assessors and those involved in delivering new staff inductions. On completion of this course delegates will understand:
- How to carry out DSE assessments in the workplace
- The extent of the ill-health effects from poorly-designed tasks and workstations
- The legal requirements and guidelines relevant to their role as an assessor
- Posture and efficient movement principles, including task, environment and equipment

When does a display screen equipment risk assessment need to be reviewed?
A regular re-assessment programme should be put in place so that all employees have a DSE check on a regular basis. We recommend that as a minimum a new DSE assessment is undertaken for every employee every 2 years.
Is a display screen equipment assessment a legal requirement?
As an employer, you must protect your workers from the health risks of working with DSE. Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 & 2002 states that employers must carry out a risk assessment of workstations used by employees to reduce any identified risks.
