RoSPA statement following announcement of Whirlpool tumble dryer recall

10/07/2019

Safety charity the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has welcomed Whirlpool’s tumble dryer recall plan.

Ashley Martin, RoSPA’s public health adviser, said: “With up to 800,000 unmodified tumble dryers posing a potential fire risk in homes across the country, it is imperative that efforts to contact affected consumers are stepped up, and we welcome today’s announcement of the recall plan that will seek to do this. We urge consumers who think they may have one of the affected models to engage with the recall process because it is so important that these dryers are removed from homes. If you have an affected model, the advice remains to unplug it and not use it. As well as those who have bought their own tumble dryers, we would urge landlords and anyone else who has provided a tumble dryer for use by others to urgently check whether their dryer is affected.

“In addition to recalling unmodified dryers, we welcome Whirlpool’s commitment to provide the Office for Product Safety and Standards with regular reports of progress made on the recall.

“The recall covers all models of vented and condensing tumble dryers produced between April 1, 2004 and September 30, 2015 and sold in the UK under the Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Proline and Swan brands. Consumers who think that they may have an affected model should call the Whirlpool helpline on 0800 151 0905, visit www.hotpointservice.co.uk/safety-notice or visit productrecall.campaign.gov.uk/.

“On product safety in general, we would urge consumers to register all new appliances of any type so they can be contacted easily in the event of a safety issue arising, using www.registermyappliance.org.uk.”

Details of the recall plan were announced by the Office for Product Safety and Standards.
