What is Emergency Service Membership?

RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders offers membership to any member of the statutory Emergency Services (Fire, Police and Ambulance) who has an up-to-date and recognised Advanced Driving or Riding qualification.

Membership with RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders as an emergency services member will be granted to emergency services drivers and riders at a discounted rate without the requirement for testing, subject to the following conditions:

  1. The individual holds a recognised advanced driving or riding certificate, obtained within the United Kingdom’s emergency services and dated within three years;
  2. The individual is serving within the services and respond to 999 calls, or if retired must still hold an advanced certificate or proof of training that that is valid for a three year period or in-between a three year cycle.

If you meet these requirements, please email us or call us on 0121 248 2099 for an application form.

Why have you increased your prices?

As you will be fully aware, costs have risen considerably in the last few months, and RoSPA has been affected by these along with everyone else.  While we have managed to keep our test and membership fees constant for the last four years (the last price rise was in June 2018 with some prices being constant for longer), we have been moved to review these in order to be able to increase the expenses we pay to our hard-working examiners, who have not had an increase for over 15 years.

Which prices have remained the same?

We have managed to keep our annual membership cost to the current rate of £40, and have also held the Initial Advanced Tutor test fees at the current rate in order support groups in their efforts to train more tutors who in turn can prepare more candidates for their advanced driver or rider test.  Three yearly retests will continue to be included at no extra cost as part of your subscription.

What has happened to the Experienced Driver Assessment?

We have renamed this ‘RoADAR Driving Review’ to more accurately reflect its function and purpose.  We have introduced a 'London weighting' to RoADAR Driving Reviews taken within the area bounded by the London Orbital Motorway (M25); this is because of the extra time and expense for examiners conducting them. Candidates would have the option of travelling outside of this area and paying the lower cost.

How can I make the most of my membership?

Please do make the most of your membership by exploring our excellent benefits package which has a range of discounts on offer, not only on insurance but also on a wide range of products and services.  You can look at the general benefits on offer by clicking on this link, https://www.roadarbenefits.co.uk/a_/ and then signing up to obtain more details and insurance quotes.  Remember also that our car and motorcycle test guidelines are available to download on our website RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders - Find your local group and join today - RoSPA , and that these will help you get the best out of your test experience.  Your copy of Care on the Road remains a valuable source of information and advice, as well as news and interesting features, and of course your local RoADAR group can be a wonderful place to meet other drivers and riders for social events and outings as well as being the go-to place for support with your test.

What RoSPA Level 3 Awards are available?

  • RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver Coaching
  • RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Rider Coaching
  • RoSPA Fleet Safety Level 3 Award

Why are there different Level 3 qualifications?

There are qualifications to suit differing needs. If you are thinking about registering on the Enhanced Rider Scheme for bikes or the Register of Fleet Driver Trainers for cars, or wish to provide training using the RoSPA brand for commercial purposes, the RoSPA Fleet Safety (RFS) qualification is the one for you. Anyone can take this qualification. If you are a RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders (RoADAR) member, the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching qualifications have been specifically designed for you. Non-subscribing members cannot take this qualification. The qualification is for subscribing members who wish to support and develop their advanced driver and rider coaching skills. To become a subscribing RoADAR member, please visit www.rospa.com/road-safety/rospa-advanced-drivers-and-riders

Members can, of course, take the RFS qualification if they wish.

What are the training differences between RFS Level 3 and the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching?

RFS Level 3

  • The RFS Level 3 award requires participants to attend five days of training, which includes a theory test and an assessed classroom learning event
  • The training is delivered face-to-face at the RoSPA Training Centre in Birmingham
  • As the RFS Level 3 is DVSA-accredited, it will enable successful participants to apply to join the DVSA register of Fleet Driver Trainers or the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS).

RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching (RoADAR Level 3)

  • The RoADAR Level 3 award consists of an e-learning package that can be undertaken at home at your own pace
  • The e-learning is followed by two days of practical training at a location close to where you live, plus an assessment
  • More time is spent completing practical ‘on the road’ sessions rather than classroom tuition.

What is the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching’s blend of theory and practical training?

There will be 20 hours of e-learning material which can be completed at home at your own convenience. Once the e-learning has been completed you will need to complete two days of practical training which will need to be completed within one month of finishing the e-learning modules. Once completed, you will take your assessment which will last approximately 30 minutes.

Can I take the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching course near to my home?

Yes – we will ask for your preferred location and match this to the geographical region of one of our trainers. We will then look at allocating a trainer to you as close to your preferred location as possible.

What is the cost of the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching course?

The price for RoADAR members is £550 plus VAT, a heavily discounted rate compared with the RFS levelled qualifications. This price includes the registration and certification fees.

I’m a diploma holder – does this mean I lose diploma status?

You will not lose your diploma status. If you do not wish to take the new levelled award, the following two options are available. Whichever option you choose, a new diploma certificate will be issued without an end date. Your chosen option must be communicated to RoSPA before your re-test date:

  1. Keep your diploma and take the standard three-yearly retest. We will issue you with a new diploma certificate without an expiry date
  2. If you wish to continue in your role as an advanced tutor, you will be required to take your three-yearly advanced tutor retest.

As an existing diploma holder, will I get a discount on the new RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching?

The cost of the qualification is £550 plus VAT for all members. This has been priced sensitively and is heavily discounted from the cost of the RFS qualification.

If I have my diploma certificate with no expiry, why should I take the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Advanced Driver/Rider Coaching?

The RoSPA Diploma was, and still is, a very worthy qualification, which is why if you request a new certificate it won’t have an expiry date. However, to keep up to date with new and advancing techniques in driver/rider education and training, it is highly recommended that you maintain your skill and knowledge level, not least to include the GDE as seen in chapter 1 of Roadcraft.

How often do I have to take the new levelled qualification?

You only need to take the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Driver/Rider coaching once. After which, members will be encouraged to complete annual continual professional development (CPD) to ensure that their training techniques remain current. Members will also be required to continue to re-take their Advanced Test every three years to maintain their riding or driving skills and knowledge. We will be creating an annual CPD practical course for members holding the RoSPA Level 3 award in Driver/Rider coaching for a minimal cost.

Why are the qualifications at Level 3?

These RoSPA qualifications have been benchmarked externally with The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation. The RoADAR and RFS qualifications have been designed for trainers, meaning that the learning outcomes from both qualifications meet Ofqual’s Level 3 standards and requirements.

Can I take a Level 4 qualification?

There is a Level 4 RFS qualification but this is for driving only. For further information on the Level 4 RFS qualification, please visit www.rospa.com/shop/products/fleet-driver-trainer

There isn’t a Level 4 rider or driver qualification for subscribing RoADAR members.

Are there any higher level qualifications that I can take?

If you want to further develop your skills, you can take the Level 3 bike course in Advanced Motorcycle Instructor Training or the Level 4 Award in Advanced Behavioural Driver Training. The Level 4 Award in Advanced Behavioural Driver Training is the only qualification higher than the Level 3 qualifications offered by RoSPA.

If I complete the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Driver/Rider Coaching, do I need to take the Advanced Tutor course if I wish to tutor in a RoADAR group?

No – this Level 3 Award will qualify you to operate as an Advanced Tutor within a group.

Do I have to be a gold grade to take the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Driver/Rider Coaching?

Yes – it is a pre-requisite of the qualification that participants hold a current RoSPA Advanced Test at gold standard, or an equivalent, namely:

  • Police Standard/ Advanced

  • DVSA Special Test

  • IAM Master Rider/ F1RST

  • Diamond Elite Bike Test

  • BMF (British Motorcyclists Federation) Blue Riband Gold.

What benefit would I get out of the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Driver/Rider Coaching that I wouldn’t get being an Advanced Tutor?

You would gain valuable insight into “client centred learning approaches” and then be able to introduce this style of learning into your training. Client-centred learning techniques are the preferred style to use for Roadcraft and the GDE (Goals for Driver Education) and can be hugely beneficial to your candidates.

If you hold the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Driver/Rider Coaching, this will also allow you to tutor within your Group as an Advanced tutor.

My advanced re-test is up to date; do I have to re-take my advanced test before taking the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Driver/Rider Coaching?

If you hold a current advanced test at gold standard, or one of the equivalents listed above, you are eligible to take the qualification.

Does the RoSPA Level 3 Award in RoSPA Driver/Rider Coaching allow me entry onto the DVSA Register?

If you want to apply to join the DVSA’s Register of Fleet Driver Trainers or Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) you will need to take the RFS Level 4 or the RFS Level 3 respectively. The RoSPA Level 3 award in RoSPA Driver/Rider Coaching is not accredited by the DVSA.

How do I book my qualification/training?

Through the RoSPA website www.rospa.com/safety-training/on-road/trainer
