Brighter Beginnings Appeal

Accidents are the biggest killer of children and young people.

Yet they don't have to happen.

In 2016/17 we're celebrating 100 years of past successes, whilst looking to the future by focusing strongly on keeping kids safe.

With this in mind, we've designed a Keeping Kids Safe pack, full of helpful tips and tools to help give little ones a safer start.

Our vision is to provide free packs for new parents. But in order to do this, we need your help. It's simple. The more money we manage to raise, the more Keeping Kids Safe packs we can provide to families - meaning a better chance of Brighter Beginnings!

Less than a third of parents think they get enough advice and information to protect their little ones from accidental harm

Why is this pack needed?

It’s simple:

Heart breaking statistics, we’re sure you’ll agree. But it doesn’t have to be like this.

Who is the pack for?

The pack is for disadvantaged parents/parents-to-be and carers of babies or children under-five.

Its aim is to show that there are simple things they can do to prevent home accidents and to provide resources and advice to help them.

Packs will be distributed via our network of childcare professionals and family support organisations. This will ensure the packs reach parents via a source they know and trust.

What’s in the pack?

Our pack’s USP is that it combines advice with practical solutions and resources. Research proves this is the most effective approach.

We use simple, short messages with clear illustrations to ensure literacy levels and limited English are not barriers to understanding. We want to empower families to feel confident about looking after their newest members.

Evidence shows that falls, poisonings, burns and scalds are the most common injuries leading to A&E attendance and hospital admission for pre-school children. So our pack focuses on these areas, but covers others such as drowning, choking and suffocation.

It provides life-saving advice, tips and tools, including an easy-to-fit cupboard lock, a nursery thermometer, a falls prevention height chart and useful kitchen/bathroom resources such as flannels and weaning spoons. Each pack also includes details for Lifeline, our free telephone and email safety enquiry service.
