Progressing from a Silver to a Gold RoSPA Health and Safety Award

Company: Stiller Warehousing & Distribution

Achievement: After winning a Silver Award in 2022 (its first year of entry), the company aimed to achieve a Gold Award in 2023 and were successful in doing so.

Background: Stiller Warehousing & Distribution is a business that operates in the warehousing and distribution sector from multiple warehouses, distribution centres, offices and vehicle workshops across three sites in the UK, employing 170 members of staff.

Challenge: Darren Holliday, Stiller’s Health & Safety Manager, said the company originally entered the RoSPA Awards because it “wanted to benchmark its health and safety policy and procedures against others to see where we stood in the industry and provide us with a strategy to move forward.”

After the initial entry and achieving a Silver Award, Darren says that the main objective was to move forward to gain a Gold Award. The company carried out a gap analysis in line with the feedback from the previous entry to understand which areas they needed to focus on.

Results: Darren explained that the results of the gap analysis prompted the company to adopt an electronic platform for health and safety that allows direct communication of risk assessments, toolbox talks, briefings, etc. “In this example and other areas, we have used the criteria a baseline for best practice,” he said.

“Achieving the Silver and Gold Awards engaged staff as they understand that the policy and procedures that we have put in place are to the highest possible standard with the aim of putting safety first for everyone,” Darren said.

“It has enhanced our reputation within the industry, providing customers and potential clients with the knowledge that we take safety seriously both on and off the road.”
