Equipping Equatorial Guinea driver trainers with knowledge and skills

The African country of Equatorial Guinea was the destination for RoSPA trainers David Vickers and Ashley Grigg, who delivered the RoSPA Level 3 International Award for Driver Trainers to delegates from energy services company Petrofac.

This course is designed to equip driver trainers with the knowledge and skills required to coach other drivers, to reduce the risk on the road in the country where they live.

Equatorial Guinea is divided into two parts, a mainland region bordered by Cameroon to the north and Gabon to the south and east, and islands in the Gulf of Guinea.

David and Ashley were based in Malabo, the country’s former capital city, on Bioko Island, just off the coast of Cameroon.

Ashley said: “The site in Malabo was comfortable and secure, consisting of a restaurant, bar, fully equipped gym and a swimming pool. The hospitality from the client was excellent throughout our stay, and we even had to have a medical when we arrived as part of their company protocols.”

The delegates had to pass a three-day advanced driving course before progressing to the five-day Level 3 course, which included theory, practical and coursework.

The theory element covers the Goals for Driver Education (GDE) matrix and coaching. The coursework consists of writing two assignments, a session plan, a driving report and a reflective account based on an assessment of one of their colleague’s driving abilities.

On the final day, the delegates were assessed on their ability to coach other drivers. RoSPA wishes the delegates all the success in the future in making a difference to road safety in their country.
