RoSPA supportive of Government's Road Safety Statement

19/07/2019

Safety charity the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) supports the Government's Road Safety Statement.

Nick Lloyd, acting head of road safety at RoSPA, said: “We are pleased that the Government has acknowledged and is responding to the recent stagnation in the number of deaths on the UK’s roads, through the announcement of a range of measures in its Road Safety Statement.

We are particularly pleased to see the statement takes a “lifelong learning” approach to planned interventions, meaning everyone, from school age to older age, is considered. This is something that we recommend as part of our national accident prevention strategy, and should start with children in Key Stages 1 and 2.

However, while we are also pleased to see that the viability of road safety targets is set to be investigated, we will continue to advocate for their introduction across the UK – we have already seen the benefit of road safety targets in Scotland and Wales, where the number of deaths and serious injuries are being reduced.

We continue to support the DfT through research, training, and provision of advice and resources, and look forward to continuing to do so in the coming years.
