We were honoured that Her Majesty The Queen (1952-2022) was RoSPA’s Patron, a role she held since her accession to the throne. Each year, we were privileged to receive a message from Her Majesty for inclusion in our Annual Review.

The passion and dedication of our trustees and 95 staff across the UK is integral to our work towards our vision for life, free from serious accidental injury.

Presidential team

Baroness Jolly has been President of RoSPA since November 2019.

A Liberal Democrat life peer, she was introduced to the House of Lords in January 2011 and made her maiden speech – on health issues – within a week.

She is currently health spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords. Previous roles have included: co-chairman of the Health and Social Care Team in the coalition; government whip with responsibilities for health, defence, culture, media and sport, and equalities; and defence spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats.

Baroness Jolly spent a large part of her professional life in the southwest of England. She taught maths for more than 15 years, and was a pioneer in information technology and computing in schools.

In 1997, she was appointed as non-executive director for an NHS trust for mental health and learning disability, and then an NHS primary care trust, finally chairing the North and East Cornwall NHS Primary Care Trust Board prior to the last NHS reorganisation in 2006. She was a Lay Inspector for the Commission for Health Improvement.

In 2016, she took the role of Chairman of Hft, a charity providing services to more than 2,500 adults with learning disability. She is also a trustee of ORUK.

Lord Jordan was President of RoSPA from 2008-2013 and is now Life President.

He has a great interest in both safety and education. Ever since presenting RoSPA’s top occupational health and safety award – the Sir George Earle Trophy – to Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) in 2005, Lord Jordan has been keen to encourage high-performing companies to learn from each other and share their safety expertise.

A trade unionist by background, Lord Jordan began his career as a shop steward at GKN in Birmingham. He was President of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union from 1986-1995, during which period he was also a member of the General Council of the Trades Union Congress. In 1995, he became general secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, a post he held until 2002. He was a governor of the London School of Economics from 1987-2002 and of the BBC from 1988-1998. He has also held a number of international presidencies, including that of the International Metalworkers' Federation, and was a member of the UN High-Level Panel on Youth Employment.

Lord Jordan was chairman of RoSPA’s board of trustees from 2008-2013 and is now chairman of the governing body of Ofqual-recognised RoSPA Qualifications.

Baroness Eaton became a Deputy President of RoSPA in 2020.

A former teacher, Baroness Eaton has been a Conservative life peer since July 2010. She was a councillor with City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council for 30 years from 1986 - 2016, leading the council from 2000 - 2006, and was the chairman of the Local Government Association from 2008 - 2011. She was made a Dame in the New Year Honours 2010 for services to local government.

Baroness Eaton is a member of the Advisory Panel of the National Media Museum, Vice-President of the Local Government Association, Vice-President of the Trading Standards Institute, Governor of Lady Lane Park Preparatory School, Bingley, and a member of Beckfoot Multi Academy Trust, Bingley.

Board of trustees

Mike was born in Liverpool and received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Manchester and an MBA from the Manchester Business School.

He began his career with Dow in 1968 where he later became president and chief executive. In 2003, he was appointed group chief executive of BNFL, successfully dismantling and overseeing the privatisation of the company until he left in June 2009.

Mike has served on various boards and committees including as chairman of Liverpool’s economic development company, senior independent director of Crystalox Solar and SNC-Lavalin, chairman of Street League, non-executive director of the Land Domain Executive, trustee of the Energy Institute, non-executive director of Sigmoid Pharma and Laird Plc, advisory board member of Tower House Partners LLP and management board strategic adviser to the Metropolitan Police.

He was made a CBE in the New Year’s Honours in 2009 for services to the energy industry and in 2014 received the recognition of Citizen of Honour for the City of Liverpool.

Rose brings a wealth of board and governance experience from her executive Chief Financial Officer (CFO) career of over 30 years, with a particular focus on financial strategy, transformational change and governance. Rose trained with KPMG and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales

Her work as a CFO for engineering and design consultancies Hyder Consulting and Arcadis gave her a great insight into the positive impact that awareness of risk through education and safety by design can have on our quality of life.

Brian is a capable and flexible Director with a successful track record in both Executive & Non-Executive roles in a wide variety of settings including public listed companies, not for profit organisations and government.

Brian has developed his leadership skills as Chief Executive in a variety of organisation turnarounds and thoughtfully/carefully adapted to the non-executive environment. Adapting to diverse sectors, he has focused on building capable teams, developing clarity of strategic intent and dynamic delivery cultures. Working in chemicals, manufacturing , housing and a safety regulator, prevention of accidents has been a strong theme throughout Brian’s career.

Sarah leads on strategic capability and engagement in the devolved nations supporting the work of the Health and Safety Executive as a GB-wide regulator.

Sarah is a career civil servant, first joining as a scientist, then moving into policy development and external collaboration. Sarah has served on the national executive of a trade union becoming elected vice president for several years. She is also a lay member of the Employment Tribunal, currently sitting on cases in Glasgow.

Stephen is a successful entrepreneur and business leader who is focused on how disruptive technology is changing the world of work – and how business can thrive in this new environment.

A seasoned chief executive officer who has built successful tech-based businesses, he has international commercial and technical expertise at a senior level, including the profitable development of businesses and the acquisition and sale of companies. His extensive international experience includes the management of global teams and the development of business and government relations in China, Japan, South Korea, Europe and North America.

Stephen now specialises in board-level leadership where he can invest and apply his knowledge to the commercialisation of new technologies such as the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, mobile payments, secure transactions and cybersecurity.

As well as his non-executive roles, he also provides advisory and investment support to high-growth companies and performs consultancy work for private equity and other investors.

Born in South Wales, Jocelyn graduated in management science from the University of Kent at Canterbury. Her career in FMCG marketing spans multiple food and beverage categories in the UK, Europe and Australia, and she is a former marketing director at consumer goods giants Kraft Foods and Danone.

She now runs her own consultancy business and has a portfolio of non-executive and charitable roles, and is a governor of the University of West of England (UWE).

Jocelyn is married with three children and lives in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

As chief executive of ConsultSafe Ltd, Graham shares his experience as a global leader within the occupational safety and health (OSH) world with more than 20 years’ experience in a variety of high- and low-risk environments in both private and public sectors. His background includes strategic OSH management for real estate, facilities management, logistics, aviation and general health and safety management sectors.

Graham is a Fellow and past president of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). He is also a Fellow of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM), a professional member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), international member of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE) and certified member of the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM), while also being one of the leading RoSPA Awards Ambassadors.

Through his work with various organisations, Graham has been able to engage on a global platform with leaders including the ILO, WHO, ISSA and governments across the world.

Michael is an independent public health consultant. In the NHS he worked mainly as a Director of Health Promotion for different health authorities. Director posts involved: managing a department, initiating and leading multi-agency groups (including accident prevention), and initiating and advising on research and evaluation.
At the University of Nottingham he was involved in injury research for 20 years. He was a temporary adviser for the WHO and has also provided advice at national and local levels on accident prevention. He has been involved in research in different countries including: England; Iran; Malawi; Palestine; and Uganda. He is a regular contributor to debates in the British Medical Journal.

Kizzy is a Partner in a large UK City law firm and is a Solicitor Advocate with Higher Rights of Audience, and has significant experience in defending companies, senior directors and employees in corporate manslaughter and serious health and safety prosecutions. She is committed to promoting a more proactive and preventative approach to health and safety – both in the UK and globally – through the use of briefings, review of corporate policies and practices, the stress testing of companies’ approaches to health and safety compliance and by being involved in consultations and industry reviews of current and proposed legislation. She promotes the importance of leading health and safety 'from the top' through Board and Trustee training sessions, reminding them of both their individual and corporate governance responsibilities.

Kizzy is recognised by The Legal 500 in 2022/3 as an “exceptional Leading Individual” for health and safety. She is also highly ranked in Chambers & Partners in 2022/3, which describes her as “impressive, forward-thinking and really excellent at what she is doing”. She has been voted one of the top 15 health and safety influencers in the UK by around 600,000 global readers of the Safety & Health Practitioner.

She has been on the Trustee and Executive Boards of a number of organisations in recent years, including a local school and health and safety industry organisations.

Executive team

Errol was appointed chief executive in July 2017, having initially joined RoSPA in 2004 and being deputy chief executive since 2006.

His evidence-based approach aims to reduce the toll of injury by empowering individuals and organisations to be “as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible”, wherever they are and whatever they are doing. Along with RoSPA colleagues, he created a new epidemiological measure – the Preventable Year of Life Lost (PrYLL) – and was the lead author of RoSPA’s influential suite of Big Book(s) of Accident Prevention.

A keen proponent of partnership working, Errol is the non-executive chairman of EuroSafe, a member of the National House Building Council (NHBC) and an adviser to both the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and the National Water Safety Forum (NWSF). He played a leading role in multi-million-pound projects Safe At Home and the Child Safety Education Coalition.

A fellow of both the Institute of Directors and the Royal Society for Public Health, Errol is qualified as a chartered director with an MBA, an engineering degree and a gold grade in RoSPA’s advanced driving test. Married with three children, Errol enjoys scuba diving, hiking and cycling.

Julia develops and implements the strategic direction of RoSPA awards, events, membership and qualifications. Responsibilities include oversight of the robust qualification and awards procedures, including the secure awards online entry system used by nearly 2,000 entrants from over 40 countries, assessment, verification, quality processes, reporting into the qualifications board of trustees and driving through changes to ensure an unrivalled membership experience.

She has a BA (hons) in Business Management and 20 years experience in developing relationships with prospective clients, ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources, budget and line management. Julia has overseen many RoSPA events but a career highlight was managing the RoSPA Centenary Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, attended by nearly 3,500 guests.

Becky is an experienced business development professional; a holder of the CIM Advanced Diploma and a registered PRINCE2 practitioner. She has a degree in history and literature from the University of Birmingham, and more than 20 years’ experience in sales, marketing and partnership related roles.

Committed to client-focused initiatives that drive real change, Becky has enjoyed a number of key roles within RoSPA. She oversaw RoSPA’s re-brand in 2015/16, and launched RoSPA’s flagship Brighter Beginnings Appeal and associated Keeping Kids Safe packs that have helped thousands of vulnerable families with under-5s.

Becky established RoSPA’s strategic partnerships department, and led the way on transformative projects such as Safe@Work-Safe@Home, with L’Oréal, and Safer by design, with Berkeley Group. In addition to partnerships, Becky’s remit also covers RoSPA’s sales, marketing and communications functions. She is committed to ensuring that clients’ needs are front and centre.

Tracey is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, has a BSc in psychology and an MSc in business and personnel management.

Having joined RoSPA in 2009, she is responsible for the wellbeing of RoSPA staff and ensuring that RoSPA is compliant with changing legislation in relation to employment matters and data protection. As Operations Director Tracey also oversees RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders (RoADAR), the administration and delivery of workplace safety and fleet training and consultancy and the management of RoSPA facilities.

Tracey and her teams focus on delivering a high quality, high value experience to RoSPA clients.

Tie joined the organisation in 2021 and is responsible for managing all aspects of the finance function of RoSPA and its trading subsidiary RoSPA Enterprises Ltd, as well as supporting the wider organisation in providing key financial insights and meeting RoSPA’s financial obligations. His role also encompasses financial systems, risk management and governance matters.

An experienced finance professional and chartered certified accountant with membership at ACCA and MAAT, Tie has a degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Birmingham. His previous employment experience includes a senior finance role at a £60m turnover group of companies in the not for profit sector and a role at KPMG. He has engaged with a range of businesses, across a variety of industries.

Outside of work, Tie’s interests include golf, badminton and swimming. He recently started playing cricket and also enjoys cycling.

A self-confessed politics geek Steve has more than 20 years’ experience in the private, public and voluntary sector. Steve has an MA in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow. Professionally he specialises specialisms in policy, strategy, change management, public affairs and campaigning.

As Head of Strategy for Clarion Group he helped oversee the formation of the UK’s biggest housing provider. With Make UK Modular, London First, and the National Housing Federation he worked with the highest levels of UK and European Government on issues such as building safety, net-zero, and labour supply. He has sat on Government enquiries, and has been a board member for organisations such as the RHS, London National Park City, and Energiesprong UK.
